Apple revamps Apple TV firmware, iOS Remote app to play nicely in an iTunes 11 world

Apple revamps Apple TV firmware, iOS Remote app to play nicely in an iTunes 11 world

If you're the early adopting type living in an Apple ecosystem, you probably upgraded to iTunes 11 almost as soon as the bits reached the servers. You might not have noticed that Apple gave its iOS Remote app and Apple TV firmware shots in the arm to match. Of the two, Remote 3.0 is the larger update and brings a simpler UI that also takes advantage of iTunes' new Up Next feature to add or prune out songs in ongoing playlists on a host computer. iPad owners reap the most rewards -- the album view now expands in place to quickly drill down to a specific track. Apple TV viewers aren't quite so coddled, although they too get Up Next support for iTunes 11 (and iTunes Match) as well as the usual rounds of speed-ups and bug fixes; we imagine a solution to some of the troubles with 5.1 is part of the package. No matter which update fits into your vision of musical harmony, you'll find details at the source links.

The Marine Corps has a saying that, when things get serious, it doesn?t matter if you?re a cook, a truck driver, clerk or radio operator. When the shit hits the fan, everyone?s a rifleman. As a result, every Marine, regardless of military occupational specialty, is trained in basic rifle marksmanship and required to regularly qualify with their primary weapon, currently the M-16A4 rifle.

The rationale being that, since modern warfare is marked by fluid, often unpredictable battle lines and that even rear echelon support troops may find themselves in armed combat at a moment?s notice, every Marine must be proficient in basic marksmanship. As we have seen in Iraq and Afghanistan, there are no more ?front lines? in today?s battlefield. US Marines with their primary weapon. Photo courtesy of the USMC.

The Internet ? The Primary Weapon for Modern Business

A similar case can be made for a basic understanding of technology, in particular Internet technology, in the context of modern business. Whether you?re an accountant, supply chain manager, banker, salesperson, or marketer, the Internet is an integral part of your job.

Technology is everywhere, and the Web continues to upend and disrupt nearly every aspect of business. Organizations at the forefront of this trend are integrating processes and systems all along the value chain and one is hard-pressed to find roles not dramatically affected by this. ?GE is now employing social computing to improve their industrial manufacturing processes and is integrating sensors that use TCP/IP and wireless protocols to optimize the efficiency of wind turbines. From procurement to logistics, over sales planning, POS, accounting, billing, payments and customer service, formerly disparate systems are increasingly integrated via networks built on Internet standards. And, in most cases, these systems are being accessed primarily via the Web (or Web-based technologies), often through a multitude of channels, including smart phones and other mobile devices. This not only streamlines business processes, reduces errors and cuts cost, but also increases speed and transparency.

Marketing in the Digital Age

One area that has been affected dramatically by the Internet is marketing. Today?s marketer works in an environment that is fundamentally different in just about every aspect from what he may have encountered as recently as a decade ago. With the rise of digital platforms, marketing has become far more complex, more fluid, and, importantly, more measurable. And yet many of today?s marketers have failed to evolve and often lack the technical skills and fundamental understanding of the Internet needed to most effectively employ the tools at their disposal.

It used to be that IT was a separate department that other functional areas called upon when they needed their PC connected to the printer or a piece of software installed. Accountants, sales people, supply chain managers, and, yes, marketers would go about their daily business blissfully unaware of what made the network run or how exactly their e-mail got to where it needed. Information technology was considered a cost center, not a source of competitive advantage or differentiation. All that has changed and many companies now ? from retailers, to publishers, financial services companies, and consulting firms ? derive a significant portion of their revenue from online activities. Digital technology is now so pervasive, affecting so many aspects of business in such fundamental ways, that many experts question if it even makes sense anymore to have IT as a separate department. Instead, technical expertise and digital fluency are now such an integral component of just about any business function, that these skills need to permeate each and every part of the org chart.

A Series of Tubes

When the late Alaska Senator Ted Stevens described the Internet as ?a series of tubes? back in 2006, he was roundly ridiculed by pundits and members of the digerati. Ironically, he was? charged with oversight and regulation of the Internet at the time. But ask a random sample of marketing folks to explain the basic building blocks of the Internet ? things like HTTP, TCP/IP, HTML and similar ? and you just might find that the late Senator had a better grasp of things back then than many marketers can muster now. And, while many eagerly employ industry buzzwords like Big Data, real-time analytics, business intelligence, cross-media publishing and more, few can describe what they actually mean and even less could write an SQL query or build and launch a simple Website.

Now many of you may interject that there is no need to understand the technical underpinnings of these tools and concepts in order to use them. And, if your job is merely to write content for your Website or place media buys, you may be right. To a point at least. But if your role goes even just a little beyond that ? and, let?s face it, most do ? you?d be dead wrong. For even those simple tasks require at least a basic understanding of SEO, a grasp of how your content management system works, or how media buys are priced dynamically based on variable CPM rates, how to identify or avoid click-fraud, and a multitude of other factors that affect success.

If you?re in an only slightly more responsible role, you may be called upon to research and identify new marketing automation software, or help assess the cost, time, and effort to integrate your CRM platform with the new e-mail marketing system. Without a basic grasp of how these work, all you have to go on is the information provided by vendors or consultants. How would you know if an estimate is too high or, as often happens, unreasonably low? There are common reasons why most IT projects come in over budget, are completed late or fail altogether and, next to poor planning and project management (and I would argue that both of these are related to technology as well), a lack of technical understanding by key decision makers is often a root cause.

Trust ? But Verify

For how can you or your team evaluate a proposal or tool without understanding both the business requirements and the technical criteria needed for it to work, especially when the two are so closely intertwined? If I had a dollar for every time I?ve heard a vendor tell me their system is ?basically plug-and-play? and offers all you could ever want or need ?out-of-the-box? with only some ?minimal configuration?, I?d be a wealthy man. The fact is, IT is complex. And it has to be in order to solve the complex business problems that need to be addressed. Sure, the CRM system your company is considering looked easy and worked flawlessly during the vendor demo, but how much time and effort was put into preparing that slick presentation? And just because your consultant ? who, let?s remember, is paid by the hour ? says that adapting the system to your processes and integrating it into your environment is ?straightforward?, doesn?t make it so.

Reality Bites

But bad IT purchase decisions and failed projects are but one symptom of inadequate technical knowledge within many organizations, albeit a very visible one. Much more prevalent ? and insidious ? are persistent under-performance and missed opportunity, which can often go undetected for years. The effects can be corrosive and will often lead to a vicious circle that feeds on itself and becomes self-reinforcing as more tech-savvy team members become frustrated and seek opportunities with organizations that ?get it? and value their expertise.

Survival is Optional

The fact is, technical competence is increasingly important, regardless if you?re a project manager, analyst, or even a sales or account director. The days when a fellow like Tom Smykowski could get by on just ?people skills? are over, today?s interconnected business calls for more. Much more. But, worry not, your company will most likely adapt and survive. The question many marketing professionals should ask though is whether they will. Younger, more tech-savvy employees are coming up quick. I was reminded of this just the other day by my 12-yo daughter. Previously, I had learned of her holiday wish-list from a letter to Santa written in crayon. This year?s list, which included a request for an iPad and a new smart phone, came to me via e-mail containing a link to Google Docs. And, just to be sure ?Santa? ? not always known for his technical prowess ? got it right, she had included links to the exact products on retail Websites and photos of the desired items on Pinterest and Instagram.

Online collaboration via Google Docs, integrated with social media and delivered using the Internet. All this by a 12-yo child in seventh grade. I work with senior digital marketing leaders at Fortune-500 companies nearly every day and many of them would not be able to pull this off without help.

Would you?

Francis Ford Coppola returns to Paramount lot, home of "Godfather" series

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is moving back to his creative stomping ground of the 1970s, taking offices on the Paramount lot starting next year, TheWrap has learned.

"As of 2013, Francis Ford Coppola will open offices and work out of the Paramount lot. He and Paramount go way back, and he is thrilled to be back there," said his publicist Leslee Dart in an exclusive statement to TheWrap.

An individual close to Coppola said he was looking to get "creative" and would be moving into the Lubitsch building on the lot. Studio chief Brad Grey welcomed an overture to bring Coppola back to the lot, the individual said.

Coppola made the monumental "Godfather" series with Paramount in the 1970s, at a time when studio executive Robert Evans collaborated with a group of iconic filmmakers, including Peter Bogdanovich, Hal Ashby, Terrence Malick and Roman Polanski on a series of landmark films.

Evans hired Coppola to direct the first "Godfather," which was released in 1972, with an eye to bringing Italian-American authenticity to the Mafia story. Coppola resisted for that very reason but eventually embraced the challenge and went on to make the series of films that became among the most indelible of contemporary movie history, with Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan and many others.

Coppola also made the acclaimed auteur film "The Conversation" in 1974 and "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" in 1988 with Paramount.

The filmmaker and his American Zoetrope company have been based in San Francisco for many years. Coppola has spent much time growing a vineyard and a wine business in the Napa Valley, even as his family spawned a filmmaking dynasty with daughter Sophia and son Roman becoming filmmakers in their own right.

This year Coppola executive produced "On the Road," an independent film based on the Jack Kerouac novel that premiered at Cannes and opens domestically December 21, and he made the experimental black-and-white movie "Tetro" in 2009.

Paramount today is very different from when Coppola was making "The Godfather." The studio was owned by Austrian tycoon Charles Bluhdorn, a temperamental mogul figure from central casting - the chairman of Gulf & Western - with a voracious ambition to acquire.

Come to think of it, that may not be altogether different from today, when another mogul from central casting owns Paramount, Sumner Redstone.

Paramount had no immediate comment.

Breakthrough could help optimize capture of sugars for biofuels

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the BioEnergy Science Center (BESC) combined different microscopic imaging methods to gain a greater understanding of the relationships between biomass cell wall structure and enzyme digestibility, a breakthrough that could lead to optimizing sugar yields and lowering the costs of making biofuels.

A paper on the breakthrough, "How Does Plant Cell Wall Nanoscale Architecture Correlate with Enzymatic Digestibility?" appears in the current issue of Science Magazine.

Principal Investigator Dr. Shi-You Ding of NREL said the imaging technologies allowed the interdisciplinary team of scientists to view the plants' architecture at scales ranging from millimeter to nanometer, a range of 1 million to one.

That allowed them to learn not just the plant cell wall architecture, but also the localization of the enzymes responsible for deconstruction of the cell wall polymers and the effects of enzyme action on the cell wall.

They didn't have to resort to wet chemistry, which ascertains the molecular makeup of a substance at the cost of destroying the spatial relationships. "The typical way to understand the structure of biomass is to break down all the individual components so they can be analyzed," Ding, a biologist, said. "The problem with that method is that then you don't know where all the components came from. You lose the structural integrity."

That's a crucial loss, because an understanding of how enzymes digest plants requires an understanding of where everything is inside the cell walls.

"Our imaging techniques gave us a deeper understanding of the cell wall structure and the process of enzyme hydrolysis of cell-wall carbohydrate polymers to release simple sugars," Ding said. "That allows us to optimize the process and reduce costs."

Dr. Paul Gilna, the director of the BESC, in which the project was conducted, added: "This work greatly improves our ability to closely examine the mechanisms behind the scientific improvements we have developed, all of which are targeted at enabling the emergence of a sustainable cellulosic biofuels industry." BESC is a multi-institutional Bioenergy Research Center supported by the Office of Biological and Environmental Research in the Department of Energy Office of Science.

The correlative imaging in real time allowed the team to assess the impact of lignin removal on biomass hydrolysis and to see the nanometer-scale changes in cell wall structure. And, that allowed them to see how those changes affected the rate at which enzymes from two different organisms digested the plant cell walls.

The aim in the biofuel industry is to access the plants' polymeric carbohydrate structures without damaging the basic molecules of which the polymers are constructed. "It's more like dis-assembling a building with wrenches, hammers and crowbars to recover re-useable bricks, wiring, pipes and structural steel than it is like using a wrecking ball or explosives," Gilna said. Enzymes, unlike typical harsh chemical catalysts, excel at this relatively gentle disassembly.

The NREL team examined two enzyme systems one from a fungus, the other from a bacterium both holding promise as biocatalysts for producing sugar intermediates for the biofuels industry.

The particular bacterial enzymes studied are organized through a large scaffolding protein into a multi-enzyme complex from which they make a coordinated attack on the cell walls. The separate fungal enzymes act more individualistically, although the ultimate result is cooperative in that case, as well.

The NREL team found that the easier the access to the cell walls, the better and faster the enzymes will digest the material.

In biofuels production, enzymes are needed to greatly speed up the chemical reactions that break down the biomass during fermentation.

The NREL scientists found that the gummy, poly-aromatic non-sugar lignin in plants interferes with enzymes' ability to access the polysaccharides in the cell wall the stuff that both the enzymes and the industry want.

So, they concluded, ideal pre-treatment should focus on getting rid of the lignin while leaving the structural polysaccharides within the cell walls intact, thus leaving a relatively loose, porous native-like structure that allows easy access by the enzymes and rapid digestion, as opposed to pretreatments that remove some of the spongier carbohydrate polymers and allow the remainder to collapse into tighter and less-accessible structures. To continue the building dis-assembly and salvage analogy, removal of the lignin is like unlocking all of the doors in the building so that the workers can get in to pull out re-useable materials, but without collapsing the overall structure so that access is blocked.

By understanding the changing structure of the plant material, scientists can learn more about how enzymes work.

"The enzyme has evolved to deal with the real structure, not the pretreated, artificially decomposed one," Ding said. "So to understand how the enzyme goes about its business, it is really important to know where cell wall components are located, as well as the various modes of enzyme action."

"Then we can optimize the whole process," Ding said. "By observing where cellulase enzymes are localized and the nanostructural changes in the plant cell wall architecture that their actions produce, we hope to suggest rational strategies for more cost effective pretreatments and better enzymes."

Windows Phone 8 "Bringing Phone Into the Windows Family"

Formally launching Windows Phone 8 today, Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Windows Phone project head Joe Belfiore and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer showed off some new features. They spent much of the time talking about how the OS is integrated with Windows itself and how it is designed for personalization. Indeed, both said that instead of trying to create one phone for everyone, the company wanted to create a phone that would be different for each user. (Due to Hurricane Sandy, I watched the announcement via webcast, instead of attending in person.)

In addition to showing off previously seen features such as Live Tiles and "lenses" for the camera, Belfiore showed off some new features, including Live Apps, apps that can run on the lock screen, a children's mode, new music options, a method for checking data usage, and a way of segmenting the people you follow into separate "rooms."

Joe Belfiore
Above: Windows Phone chief Joe Belfiore

Belfiore discussed how Windows Phone has a "different point of view" than the "icons for apps" focus of iPhone or Android (which he called a copy of the iPhone experience); instead, he said Windows Phone is focused on people first, not on apps. He said there are now 120,000 apps available for Windows Phone, which will now be available in 50 languages and 191 countries.

He highlighted the Live Tiles concept that lets you pin your favorite people and apps, allowing them to constantly update. He noted that with Windows Phone 8, the tiles can be resized and moved around. We've seen this and several other features before, including improved camera applications, a new Wallet feature, and a shared core with the Windows 8 operating system.

He followed with the concept of Live Apps that can integrate into the wallet, other hubs, and now into the lock screen of the phone itself. Belfiore highlighted this with a new version of Facebook, which he said will automatically show photos from your Facebook feed and Facebook notifications on your lock screen. You can choose which application appears on the lock screen. This looks cool, if not crucial.

In addition to Facebook, Belfiore talked about new applications from Twitter and Skype. Skype, he said, will be "always on"?able to receive messages at any time without running in the background and using battery life. With new things like Words with Friends and Draw Something, Microsoft now has 46 of the top 50 applications. The Unity games development environment is coming, with games like Temple Run. Urban Spoon is coming with speech enabled directly. He talked about Angry Birds Star Wars and Fairway Solitaire, which runs on Xbox, Windows 8, and Windows Phone 8. Pandora is coming in early 2013, he said, with one year of free music with no ads. The Software Development Kit for creating Windows Phone 8 applications will be free and publically available at the Build conference tomorrow (which I also will be unable to attend, due to the storm, but hope to follow online).

Another new feature is called Data Sense, which he said "helps you use less data so you get the most of out of your data plan."

Data Usage

This compresses every webpage you view and finds nearby Wi-Fi hot spots so you can offload data. It shows you data usage so you can see where you are getting near your plan limit, and which applications are using data. Microsoft's testing showed that users will be able to get 45 percent more Web browsing on a data plan. This will initially be offered on Verizon, but will be coming to other carriers soon. Depending on how well this works, this could be a rather important feature.

Kid's Corner creates a "separate place on your phone," where your kids can run their applications, games, and music, without impacting the rest of the phone or letting them download or post things you don't want them to.

Kids Corner

Belfiore brought his own kids on stage to show this off. He was then joined by actress Jessica Alba, who explained an incident in which her daughter accidentally sent a tweet to her four million followers. (She was promoting her new firm, The Honest Company, which is working on a new app.)

Belfiore, Ballmer, Alba

I do like a new feature called "Rooms" within the People hub of the phone, which sounds a lot like "circles" in Google+ where you can gather just a few people you want to communicate with. It comes initially with a Family room, with members of your family, and lets you send private messages or share locations just with people in that room. Belfiore noted that you can use this to make a grocery list, for instance. You can create other rooms, and this will work even with people who have other phones through an app. Perhaps most importantly, Belfiore mentioned that this was designed to be "the perfect companion" for your Windows PC. You should think about your phone, your tablet, and your PC together as a "virtual office," he said, noting how using SkyDrive when you are editing a document on one machine, you can resume work on it on another, whether it is a phone, tablet, or PC. (I have been using SkyDrive that way on multiple machines for a bit lately, and it is convenient).

He pointed out how this works with OneNote, allowing you to take a quick voice note on your phone, which is transcribed into text and immediately available on your phone, tablet, or PC. And if you take a photo, it automatically shows up on all these devices. He contrasted it with other cloud services, saying it works not only with photos and videos, but also with documents. It comes with 7GB free and gives you complete control over your content (unlike iCloud, which only saves your photos for 30 days). The service is also available for Xbox.

Belfiore only briefly mentioned the camera features, but spent a bit more time talking about the new Xbox music service, which connects your music across devices. He mentioned new Sync companion software for Windows 7, 8, and the Mac, which allows you to move your music and playlists from your iTunes library to your phone. Ballmer spent much of his time on stage talking about the "killer hardware" and carriers. He started by showing the Nokia Lumia 920, where he highlighted the camera with optical image stabilization and continued with the Samsung Ativ S, where he talked about the large screen and its light weight. He also brought up the HTC Windows Phone 8X, which has built-in Beats audio, amps, and an wide angle lens on the front of the camera. The first Windows Phone 8 models will go on sale in Europe this weekend.

Steve Ballmer

In the United States, Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T will be offering phones. Verizon will offer the HTC 8X and the Nokia Lumia 822 by Thanksgiving, and the Samsung Ativ Odyssey in December; T-Mobile will offer the Lumia 810 and 8X by November 14; and AT&T will offer the Lumia 920, 820, and 8X in November. Ballmer said the 65 Microsoft stores will sell every Windows Phone available in the U.S., with the online store offering every phone in every color. Windows Phone will be supported by hundreds of mobile operators and retailers around the world.

Ballmer's big focus, though, was on the personalization possibilities with Windows Phone 8 and how it works with Windows PCs. There has been an incredible response to Windows 8 and Microsoft Surface during this launch weekend, and preliminary demand is above what it was for Windows 7, since there is a special demand for touch designs. Between Windows 8, Surface, and Windows Phone 8, he said, "you won't be able to turn on a TV or open a magazine without seeing a Microsoft ad."

Ballmer talked about how one of Microsoft's big goals is "bringing phone into the Windows family," and it struck me how just a few years ago, such a statement might be seen as anti-competitive. Now, Microsoft is actually an underdog in the mobile world, so this is part of a comeback plan. There are a lot of cool features here?I've long liked Live Tiles, and I think the "Kid's Corner" and Windows integration parts could be incredibly useful?but Microsoft needs to prove it can get great new applications and build a critical mass here. This is clearly a pivotal time for the company.

Why you should write your own blog | ABC Copywriting blog

What a week! My head was spinning with half-remembered remarks, half-formed thoughts and half-baked ideas. I knew there was only one way to get it all straight: I had to confide in my diary.

Everything was set. I was tired, yet not overly so. I?d enjoyed a fine dinner. A little red wine had pleasantly loosened the bonds of reason. As I drew up a chair and lit the lamp, the universe itself seemed hushed, holding its breath for the act of creation.

But I couldn?t be arsed. So I phoned some guy who does diary entries for ?10 each and told him what I wanted. He sent me something a couple of days later and all I had to do was paste it in. Sorted!

If that last paragraph seemed fine and natural to you, you might want to stop reading right here. But if it didn?t, you?re already down with my theme: blogging, like keeping a diary, is something you can?t really outsource.

Well, how did I get here?

Blogs, or ?web logs?, evolved from online diaries, and the classic format for a post reflects this ancestry: a few hundred words long, date-stamped, written in the first person, reactive to events and coloured by opinion.

Original blog daddy

A blog as a whole is made, not born. Its themes, style and structure coalesce gradually rather than being imposed or decided at the outset. Instead of appearing as a fait accompli, it emerges in fragments, its overall shape only becoming clear over time.

Like the rings of a tree, a blog shows where you?ve been, and how far you?ve come. In the early days of this blog, I barely knew what I was writing about, or who for. (The answers were ?not much? and ?almost nobody?.) So while it?s embarrassing to look back at me-too potboilers like this, it makes any progress I?ve made since then all the more gratifying.

The whole story

But it?s not all onwards and upwards. An honest blog documents self-doubt as well as self-development. If you?ve changed your mind, or can see both sides, your blog can reflect that too. Witness the way I?ve come down both pro and anti the movement for Plain English, or maintained that copywriting is an art while admitting to my own lack of creativity.

Up close, such inconsistencies do make you look a bit of a prat. Being generous, though, they show willingness to follow your ideas wherever they lead, and to share opinions you?re not completely sure of. Over time, a blog develops into a true reflection of its author (or authors), with all their contradictions, frailties and failings.

In other words, it tells a story. An individual, human story. Indeed, for most of us, our blog will be the most enduring cultural artefact we create. Your blog is the book of your life, and since work is a part of life, that?s true of business as well as personal blogs.

Vocational therapy

However, a blog isn?t just a record. It can also be a powerful force for change. Just as writing down your travels, your diet or your dreams can make a big difference to the way you think and act, so recording your deskbound thoughts can transform your working life. Blogging is a kind of vocational therapy.

Although it can be fiercely challenging, putting business ideas into words is an excellent intellectual workout. Writing clarifies ideas, chases out woolly thinking and (as noted) exposes inconsistency. It calls your bluff if you?re hedging your bets. Basically, it helps you get your head straight.

More subtly, blogging helps you know thyself. Sometimes, to write your opinions is to discover them ? maybe even to be surprised by them. And that deeper self-knowledge can easily lead to new directions in your work.

Sense of purpose

This is why blogs are special: they embody the human thoughts and feelings that give life to a business. Organisations are made of people, and blogs answer the big questions about them. Why should anyone, inside or outside it, care about this business? What makes people want to be part of it, or put part of themselves into it? Why does it do what it does, and not some other thing that might make more money? What, in the deepest sense, is its purpose?

Short of physically speaking with the people in a business, shaking their hands and looking into their eyes, you?ll find your best answer on their blog. And it?s this human dimension that distinguishes a blog from other forms of commercial writing.

Arguably, Twitter does something similar, but it?s too ephemeral and fragmented. Most tweets aren?t even seen by most followers, and only the most unhinged cyberstalker reads a Twitter feed right through, like a book. Facebook is perhaps more permanent, but it?s also less pure in a textual sense: writing is only one aspect of the experience, and it?s still more about comment and conversation than extended narrative or reflection. If reading a blog is like taking a look at someone?s diary, following them on Twitter and Facebook is like meeting them in a crowded pub.

Defining quality

Blogging, then, is a Very Good Thing. But clearly, some blogs, and some posts, are better than others. What makes a ?good? blog post?

I put ?good? in quotes because the definition, in recent years, has been very much up for grabs. If you believe everything you read, you?ll probably conclude that good blogging is about information, opinion, entertainment, search-engine prominence, frequency, relevance, uniqueness and ?shareability? ??ideally, all at the same time.

Some of these aims have not come from bloggers, or their audiences, but have been imposed by the middleman who stands between them. Because Google is the gatekeeper of the web, it?s skewed the idea of ?quality? towards its chosen proxy measures for that elusive concept: keyword density and any old backlink in the early days, social profile and human-curated backlinks more recently.

As Google tried to reflect human values in its algorithm, it placed new obligations on website owners. Suddenly, everyone had to have a blog and update it regularly. So people started blogging for the sake of blogging ??not because they necessarily had anything to say that week. Blogging became less human, more mechanistic, as businesses looked for the parameters and processes that would deliver an effective blog. Having been like painting a picture, blogging was now more like painting a fence.

Welcome to the machine

Naturally, some firms resent this new drain on their resources, so they reach out to suppliers who can take the problem away.

Those who ?get it?, and do not expect straw to be spun into gold, hook up with thoughtful, professional copywriters who will give their blog the time and attention it deserves ? which is the next best thing to doing it yourself.

The rest, I imagine, end up somewhere like the site I found by Googling ?blog writing service?, which promises ?original blog posts that are specifically designed for your company and your industry? that will deliver ?a strong, stable, and consistent rise in your page rank?. ?See our system in action? is the call to action on the green button.

Personally, I?ve seen quite enough of this ?system? in ?action?. From this wretched, utterly materialist perspective, writing is just a cog in the machine. Words are a fungible commodity that can be counted out and traded, like sugar beets. Once bought, such ?content? is expected to perform, to deliver value, to yield returns like any other asset. But words aren?t rivets; they?re the thread that links us together. They?re not just valuable, they?re precious.

Beyond gaming

Clearly, people doing low-rent content marketing couldn?t care less about the soul of language. But their approach isn?t just heartless ? it?s pointless too.

Many of the oft-quoted aims of blogging are ferociously hard to achieve in practice. Original information? Takes time, and can cost money too. Search ranking? Tough, and getting tougher, for anything but long-tail terms. Social popularity? Hit-and-miss at best, impossible at worst (especially for intrinsically dull or ?necessary evil? brands like Anusol or Rentokil). As for uniqueness, it?s practically unobtainable unless you?re writing for an insanely narrow audience. And the truth is that most off-the-peg blog posts will not deliver against these exacting targets, despite the pedlars? promises.

Instead of trying to game the system, businesspeople could consider how their own writing could help. Not by rocketing them to page one, or going viral Gangnam style, but by opening a conversation with the people who are visiting and leaving their site without picking up the phone. And as Google Analytics will readily tell you, there are always far more of those people than you might want to admit.

Sincerity, enthusiasm and understanding

Imagine you are looking for a driving tutor for your son or daughter. You find a guy through Google and click through to his site. You notice he has a blog. You start reading.

Now, you are not expecting him to write like Seth Godin. In fact, such incongruence of tone would probably raise suspicion. Instead, you?re looking for someone who understands. Someone who?s already thinking about the things that are important to you. Someone who?s sincere about what they do, and enthusiastic about the benefits they can offer you.

In this case, thoughtful posts about putting the learner driver at their ease, alternative teaching techniques and handy aides-memoires for students might go a long way.

The odd spelling slip or grammar howler doesn?t matter. You?re not marking an essay; you?re getting to know a human being. Conversely, there is no need for the blogger to try and impress you with Martin Amis-style verbal sorcery; this is a situation where simple truths beat technical mastery.

The blogger?s mindset

Creating a blog like that is all about cultivating ?blogger?s mind?. This is a sort of ambient attunement to potential subjects, encompassing everything from current affairs and industry developments to something you saw on TV. Like volatile chemicals, ideas react when mixed, and before you know it you?re writing ?Why learning to drive is like going on a first date?.

Chance favours the prepared mind. To get better ideas, just keep the question ?could I make a blog post out of this?? always at the back of your mind. Believe me, it works a whole lot better than sitting down to try and generate ideas for posts by force of will. And it?s something that can only really be done by someone within the business rather than a third party.

Blogger?s mind gave me this post about Denis Waterman. I saw the story about Waterman?s domestic abuse on the Guardian. His quotes clicked with something I knew about language. I wrote the post quickly, over breakfast, and posted it within an hour. And people liked it. (Sorry for using so many examples from my own blog, but I can?t know the thought processes behind other people?s.)

Through their eyes

When I have blogged on behalf of clients, the process has been most enjoyable and productive when I?ve got into their ?blogger?s mind?. I?m sure those writers who provide a thoughtful, high-quality, non-commodified blog writing service aim for the same thing. Over time, it is possible to develop an approximation of the client?s worldview, allowing you to have their ideas for them.

Interviewing is by far the best way to do this. But, because it?s still like writing someone else?s diary, the results are 80?90% at best. Like digitised models of human beings, ghostwritten posts can fall into the ?uncanny valley? where near-perfection is somehow more unsettling than something honestly artificial. That last 10% makes all the difference.

Arguably, a better approach than writing for the client is to induct them in the way of ?blogger?s mind?, so they can build up their own blogging muscles. Teach someone to fish, and they eat for life, as they say. But this requires some initiative and commitment on their part, and some clients aren?t prepared to ante up. In a way, it?s hard to blame them ? after all, they hired someone to write for them, not chivvy them to do it themselves.

Perhaps the most compelling reason for them to make the effort is to manage the conversation that a good post can generate. Given the right process of drafting and approval, a good writer can do a reasonable job of standing in for the client within the boundaries of the post itself. But as Han Solo observed, ?Good against drones is one thing. Good against the living? That?s something else.? Responding to questions and challenges off the cuff, when you don?t really know what you?re talking about, is hair-raising for the writer and reputationally risky for the client. (It?s the same problem that plagues those who run Twitter accounts on behalf of clients.)

Copywriter required

So, if bringing the personal touch to a blog is so cool, shouldn?t business people write all their stuff? Should they, perhaps, write their own websites, brochures and ads as well?

The answer is an emphatic ?no? ? and not just because I have a vested interest.

As I?ve argued, blogging is a very particular type of writing, and the points I?ve made here don?t apply to other formats. When we look at a website or an ad, we?re not expecting to talk to a human, but to see the benefits of a product or service communicated in the most vivid and engaging way possible. And not just expecting ??hoping. In this case, a bit of the copywriter?s magic is exactly what we want.

That?s why I?m still delighted that people choose me to give voice to their product or brand. But I?m increasingly uneasy about doing the same for their blog. They really might be better off doing it themselves.

Cisco to buy cloud-networking start-up Meraki for $1.2 billion

(Reuters) - Networking equipment company Cisco Systems Inc said it will buy privately held cloud networking company Meraki for $1.2 billion in cash as part of its cloud and networking strategy.

Cisco said the acquisition of Meraki, which was founded in 2006 by members of MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science, is expected to close in the second quarter of Cisco's 2013 fiscal year and is subject to regulatory approval.

Cisco's second quarter runs until the end of January.

Meraki - funded by Sequoia Capital and Google Inc - offers Wi-Fi technology, switching, security and mobile device management from the cloud with a focus on mid-sized businesses.

"This is a very logical move for Cisco," said ZK research analyst Zeus Kerravala.

He said the deal will allow Cisco to offer alternative solutions to traditional Wi-Fi deployment models like smaller competitors, such as Aruba Networks and Ruckus Wireless, which debuted on Friday.

"Cisco didn't really have anything to counter that before," Kerravala noted.

Meraki's Chief Executive Sanjit Biswas said in a letter to employees posted on the company website that Cisco had approached the company several weeks ago.

The company's founders had at first rejected the offer in favor of continuing Meraki's strategy aimed at an initial public listing.

"After several weeks of consideration, we decided late last week that joining Cisco was the right path for Meraki," Biswas said.

He also said that Meraki had achieved a $100 million bookings run rate, grown to 330 employees and had a positive cash flow.

Gaza: Israel Denies Strikes Targeted Media

Israel has denied targeting foreign media in airstrikes in Gaza, saying it was aiming for Hamas communication sites.

The Israeli Defence Forces have released video footage of one of the media buildings, occupied by a team from Sky News and other international broadcasters, being hit.

No one was injured in the attack, which happened about 7.15am (local time).

About five hours earlier, another media building in Gaza, housing Hamas' al Aqsa television among others, was also hit in an Israeli airstrike on Sunday.

Six journalists were injured in that strike, including an employee of al Quds television station who lost his leg.

The Israeli military said in a statement it had "targeted two Hamas operational communication sites that were identified by precise intelligence".

Discussing the attack on the building used by Sky News, Israeli military spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said a Hamas antenna was the target of the strike.

"The media building was taken by Hamas to be used as human shields - we see this time after time, year after year," she told Sky News.

"Hamas chose, out of all the buildings in the Gaza Strip, to choose this building - the media, civilian building - to place its electronic infrastructure and communications on the rooftop.

"The target was on the roof and only that target was hit."

She added: "The entire building stayed safe. The entire floors stayed safe. Maybe there was some broken windows as a result of the explosion but no more than that.

"The target was the Hamas facility."

But she said: "I say this to any civilian in Gaza: stay away from Hamas sites.

"This is my recommendation to the journalists as well as others."

Sky's Middle East Correspondent Sam Kiley, who was in the building when it was hit, said there was reason to disbelieve Israel's reason for the attack.

"I think what happened to us just illustrates in a general sense that no one in Gaza can feel safe," he said.

Kiley said it is very hard for civilians to know what locations are being used by Hamas.

"It isn't easy for the 1.7 million Gazans to know what is considered a target by Israel and what is not," he said.

"Hamas don't put a flag on each of their firing positions. They are extremely well camouflaged. Large numbers of them are indeed hidden in built-up areas and on waste ground.

"There are known Hamas areas, but there are a lot of unknown areas and there are lots more subtle things, like radio transmission, relay stations and such, which is presumably what they were hitting on the building we were in.

"It was pretty much the tallest building in Gaza, and therefore it is pretty much inevitable that communications equipment is going to be put there."

Kiley said there is further confusion because Hamas is the government and a militia.

"Hamas is not just a militant organisation, it is also the government here. It runs the hospitals, the sewage collection, the trash collection, the education department.

"Therefore it is very troubling for Gazans to try to figure out where Israel is going to lay the distinction in terms of what is a crossover between military and civilian activity."

The Foreign Press Association issued a statement saying it was "concerned" by the attacks, adding that both buildings house or have been used by members of the association.

The statement pointed to a 2006 UN Security Council resolution condemning attacks on journalists in conflict zones.

Larger NC GOP House caucus meeting in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Incumbents and the newly elected representatives of the expanding majority of North Carolina House Republicans in the Legislature are gathering for the first time and mapping out their plans for the next two years.

The House Republican Caucus scheduled its first meeting since Election Day on Saturday morning at a Raleigh hotel. That's where they'll have a meal and discuss the legislative session that begins in January.

Unofficial results show Republicans now will hold 77 of the House's 120 seats, or an increase of 9 seats compared to 2010.

The caucus will soon have to choose chamber leaders, but House GOP officials say votes on contested top races weren't expected Saturday. Republicans may nominate Rep. Thom Tillis of Cornelius for another two years as speaker.

Why Peter Thiel Doesn't Tweet

Peter Thiel, an early Facebook investor and board member, has made a fortune off a company built on persuading people to share.

But that doesn't mean Thiel has to like it.

The billionaire investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist describes himself as a reluctant, distrustful user of social media. He doesn't tweet, he uses Facebook only in an "unstructured" way, and he painstakingly revises his emails, always bearing in mind that even his private correspondence could become public.

His key concern: the Internet's infallible memory.

"I don't actually tweet or do any of these short messages. I'm still probably very old-school in that I'm always being incredibly nervous about anything I say or write," Thiel said during a panel discussion on social media and politics hosted Thursday by The New Republic magazine. "Perhaps I've become even more nervous about these things in the last decade because there's a sense that everything you say will be with you for all of eternity."

"One of my friends once told me that writing a book was more important than having a child because you could always disown a child if it turned out badly, but you could never disown a book you'd written," Thiel added. "Now there's a feeling that's true of anything."

Even if Thiel doesn't share his thoughts via social media, he said he writes with the expectation that his words will be shared -- a view that seems especially sage after the revelations of the David Petraeus-Paula Broadwell-Jill Kelley-John Allen love rectangle, in which indiscreet emails have brought down leaders at the highest ranks.

"I'm always meticulous, even in the emails that I write. I read them and reread them. I assume that every single email is something that will be in the public domain," Thiel said. "What will this look like if this is published someday? One has to be careful about these things."

He is not only wary of social media's potential for personal embarrassment, but dubious of the innovation it embodies. It's a complaint reflected in a treatise from Thiel's venture capital firm, Founders Fund. "We wanted flying cars," it reads. "Instead we got 140 characters."

Thiel is also the co-author of a forthcoming book, The Blueprint: Reviving Innovation, Rediscovering Risk, and Rescuing the Free Market, which, according to its Amazon description, demonstrates "that we have become a risk-averse society, hobbled by tort laws and government regulations, short-term financial thinking, and mind-numbing complacency." One of Thiel's two co-authors, Max Levchin, has declared innovation "between dire straights and dead."

Asked specifically about social media's influence on political discourse, Thiel said that technology's key effect had been to "corrode and undermine the sacredness of government and politicians."

"The effect of the digital age is this political atheism," said Thiel. "That's problematic because I don't know how we get things to work if nobody believes in anything, but it's a good thing because people believed in mistaken things before."
