Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan was released from prison Wednesday after more than five years in a federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Ind., for corruption. Ryan, a 78-year-old father and grandfather, reported to a halfway house in Chicago just before 7 a.m.
The former governor, convicted in 2006 of federal corruption charges, was given a strict schedule to get from the prison to the West Side facility about four hours away. He arrived wearing a suit and tie and flanked by staffers and surrounded by the media.
There was speculation that Ryan made a request to stop to visit the grave site of his late wife, Lura Lynn, who died in 2011 of lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis and whose funeral he was not allowed to attend. His family has said it would hold off having a formal memorial for her until his release.

Once at the halfway house, Ryan faces a new reality that's at the same time starkly different and very much the same as prison.
He?s expected to stay for a maximum of six months at the same Salvation Army facility where dozens of onetime politicos from Illinois made their transition back to freedom. They included former City Clerk James Laski and Cicero Town President Betty Loren-Maltese.
Ryan?s former chief of staff, Scott Fawell, said Monday this will be the place where Ryan will most likely mingle with the hardest criminals he will see during his entire stay with the Bureau of Prisons.
"You can be in the same room with guys who have done 20 or 30 years in prison, where he?s used to a little different clientele," Fawell explained.
Ryan will be required to take mandatory classes on such mundane skills as opening a bank account, writing a check, and making out a resume. It sounds ridiculous for a former governor but is par for the course in the Bureau of Prisons' one-size-fits-all approach to corrections.
"It?s for everybody," Fawell said. "Whether you?ve done 30 years or three months."
After orientation, it will be time for the former Springfield dealmaker to go to work. Every halfway house resident is required to have a job and to work 40 hours each week. Ryan will have to sign out when he departs in the morning and call when he arrives at his job site. He is to be back at the Salvation Army facility at Ashland and Monroe by 7 p.m. every evening.
Ryan is said to have lost weight during his time in prison and appears in good health except for some pending dental problems.

Apple expects China to overtake the United States as its biggest market, the company?s chief executive has told a Chinese government news agency. ?China is currently our second largest market. I believe it will become our first. I believe strongly that it will,? the Xinhua news agency quoted Tim Cook as saying in an interview. The report gave no details of when Cook thought China, already Apple?s second-biggest market, might pass the US. Apple spokespeople in China did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Apple has said sales in China more than doubled in 2010 and 2011, though growth has slowed in the past year. Apple?s iPhones, iPads and other gadgets are popular with China?s highest-earning consumers but the country?s fast-growing smartphone market is dominated by handsets that run on the rival Google Android system. Cook was in Beijing to meet Chinese regulators and managers of state-owned China Unicom, the first Chinese carrier to support the iPhone. Have you been trying to break into the online world of business and need internet advertising help? You?re not alone. Although many small businesses realize the importance of the internet, they often do not take advantage of what Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines have to offer. And many people don?t even know what Google Maps is all about ? but this is essential if you own a brick and mortar business. Similar services exist in Bing and Yahoo too.
These are just some of the many internet advertising places. There are many other venues that you can use to promote your business, products and services:
1. Article Directories and Content Sites. Registering with Ezine Articles (and the hundreds of other article directories), Hub Pages and Squidoo is completely free. Your goal with these sites is to create informative articles about your products/services and publish them here. Doing this will earn you credibility, expert status and possibly higer ranking in the search engines once you start bringing in traffic to your site.
2. Search Engine Pay Per Click Platforms: All of the major search engines and many other search engines offer the possibility for you to advertise on their sites and some of the most sophisticated internet advertising help. It works like this. . .you place an ad based on some keywords that are relevent to your business, products or services. All of the search engines give you free tools that you can use to find the keywords that you want to target. You will bid on each keyword that you advertise and the search engines will also help you to identify what your bid should be. Once you have placed your ad, whenever anyone types in the keyword that you targeted into that search engine, your ad will come up. Where it appears depends on how high you placed your bid and how relevent your ad is to the keywords that you specified.
3. Ezine Advertising. Advertising in online magazines, called ezines, is another very effective way to get started with internet advertising. As with all of your advertising efforts, this requires some research on your part. Your goal is to find an ezine which fits your target market and advertsing budget. Don?t discount ezines with small subscriber count. They may allow you to advertise for very little and often have very responsive lists.
4. Banner advertising. Placing banner advertisement on high traffic sites within your indusry is also an effective ways to bring in traffic to your own site.
5. Online Classified Ads. Many online classified sites allow you to place free advertisements within restrictions. Upgrading to become a paid member usually allows you to place more sophisticated ads more frequently than if you are a paid member.
Each of these methods offers internet advertising help in the form of written instructions, tutorials and support communities within their sites. Dan Price is the Owner of http://MoneyScholar.com. LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Britney Spears is out of "The X Factor" after a season in which the pop star failed to deliver a ratings boost for the singing contest, a person familiar with the show's plans said Thursday.
Creator Simon Cowell and fellow producers are discussing replacements for Spears and another panelist, record producer Antonio "L.A." Reid, said the person, who lacked authority to comment publicly and insisted of anonymity.
Reid previously announced he was leaving after two seasons. Demi Lovato appears likely to return, joining Cowell on the revamped panel. The show is due to return in the fall.
The departures are yet another shake-up for "The X Factor," Cowell's attempt to strike magic with a U.S. version of his successful U.K. series. Cowell replaced panelists Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones after a disappointing first season, and ratings dropped in the second season.
The December season finale drew 9.7 million viewers, compared to about 11 million for the first year's season-ender. Although the series has failed to match Cowell's bold pre-debut predictions, and certainly hasn't eclipsed sister Fox show "American Idol," it's helped shore up the network's fall schedule.
Pop star Spears, however, proved less than a one-season wonder.
Combining fame and a history of erratic behavior, she was seen as a potential spark for better ratings. But reviewers faulted her for appearing inexpressive to the point of boredom and a repetitively dull use of the word "awesome."
On Tuesday, Fox network chief Kevin Reilly defended Spears, saying she was doing "a really good job" during a Q&A with the Television Critics Association.
"She came on, people remain fascinated with her and always will be," he said. "Maybe some people were waiting for more drastic displays of some nature that never came, so for those expecting that, it didn't happen."
Asked whether Fox would be on board to bring Spears back, Reilly replied "yeah" ? this despite the fact producers have been talking since Christmas about substitutes for her and Reid.
Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian joined the show as co-hosts this season.

For those of you who are down on yourselves
because you can?t lose weight, please realize the complexity of the issue. Forget will
power and self-discipline, calories in and energy out. The truth is, many factors affect our eating and size.?
Out
of body experiences by Julie Deardorff (Sarasota
Herald Tribune, Health and Fitness, 10/30/12) provides the lowdown on how our weight is affected by environment. I guarantee that on your own you?d never have imagined that some of these factors would impact your weight, so three cheers for scientific studies.
Pregnant women who breathe high levels of diesel
fuels/hydrocarbons are more likely to have obese children than
those who don?t. These chemicals can be found outdoors, but are also in
?cigarette smoke, candles, incense, and home heating fuels.?
The intake of antibiotics in infancy may upset
the balance of gut bacteria which in turn affect ?hormones related to
metabolism.?
?
Sleep deprivation ?may decrease resting
metabolic rates, or the number of calories burning while doing nothing? and
alter ?the circulation levels of the hormones that control hunger.?
?Children of older women are more likely to be
obese? and ?overweight pregnant women can?pre-program their
offspring for obesity.?
?Inhaling increased amounts of carbon dioxide,?
making blood more acidic, may lead to ?increased appetite and
decreased activity.?
?
Because colder temperatures can activate
calorie-burning brown fat, higher room temperatures inadvertently may be
helping us store more calories.
?
Air-conditioning keeps folks indoors rather than
outdoors where they get more exercise. Moreover, when we allow
our bodies to get hot, we end up eating less.
Bisphenol A (in plastics) and other chemicals
may ?mimic or block the body?s hormonal actions? which may cause
obesity in children.
Respiratory or gastrointestinal infections ?may
infect fat cells, making them grow more quickly.?
Some medications may promote weight gain.
Because ?nicotine increases energy expenditure
and may reduce appetite,? people may gain weight after stopping
smoking
As you know, I?m all for focusing
on eating, not weight, but it?s
important for you to realize that there are factors outside your control that
affect your size. So, please, go a little easier on yourselves. You can only do
what you can do.
Best,
Karen?

Jan. 4, 2013 ? A University of Alberta researcher's examination of fossilized dinosaur tail bones has led to a breakthrough finding: some feathered dinosaurs used tail plumage to attract mates, much like modern-day peacocks and turkeys.
U of A Paleontology researcher Scott Persons followed a chain of fossil evidence that started with a peculiar fusing together of vertebrae at the tip of the tail of four different species of dinosaurs, some separated in time and evolution by 45 million years.
Persons says the final vertebrae in the tails of a group of dinosaurs called oviraptors were fused together forming a ridged, blade-like structure. "The structure is called a pygostyle" says Persons. "Among modern animals only birds have them."
Researchers say fossils of Similicaudiptery, an early oviraptor, reveals feathers radiating from the fused bones at the tail tip. Similicaudiptery was not known to be a flying dinosaur and Persons contends its tail feathers evolved as a means of waving its feathered tail fans.
No direct fossil evidence of feathers has been found with the fossils of the oviraptors that followed Similicaudiptery, but Persons says there is still strong evidence they had a feathered tail.
Persons reasons that because the later oviraptor had the same tail structure as the feathered Similicaudipteryx, the tails of later oviraptors' still served the same purpose, waving feathered tail fans.
Persons says the hypothesis of oviraptor tail waving is supported by both the bone and muscle structure of the tail.
Individual vertebrae at the base of an oviraptor's tail were short and numerous, indicating great flexibility. Based on dissections of modern reptile and bird tails, Persons reconstruction of the dinosaur's tail muscles revealed oviraptors had what it took to really shake their tail feathers.
Large muscles extended far down the tail and had a sufficient number of broad connection points to the vertebrae to propel oviraptor's tail feathers vigorously from side to side and up and down.
Oviraptors were two-legged dinosaurs that had already gone through major diversifications from the iconic, meat eating dinosaur family. Oviraptors were plant eaters that roamed parts of China, Mongolia, and Alberta during the Cretaceous period, the final age of the dinosaur.
"By this time a variety of dinosaurs used feathers for flight and insulation from the cold, "said Persons. "This shows that by the Late Cretaceous dinosaurs were doing everything with feathers that modern birds do now," said Persons.
In addition to feathered-tail waving, oviraptors also had prominent bone crests on their head, which Persons says the dinosaur also may have used in mating displays.
"Between the crested head and feathered-tail shaking, oviraptors had a propensity for visual exhibitionism," said Persons.
