Israel eases Gaza blockade allowing a shipment of gravel for private construction for 1st time since 2007 - @Reuters

GAZA | Sun Dec 30, 2012 5:42am EST

GAZA (Reuters) - Israel eased its blockade of Gaza on Sunday, allowing a shipment of gravel for private construction into the Palestinian territory for the first time since Hamas seized control in 2007.

A Palestinian official with knowledge of an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that ended eight days of fighting last month between Israel and Gaza militants said the move had been expected as part of the deal.

"This is the first time gravel has been allowed into Gaza for the Palestinian private sector since the blockade," said Raed Fattouh, the Palestinian official overseeing the shipment of 20 truckloads of the material.

Israel tightened the blockade after Hamas, an Islamist group that refuses to recognize the Jewish state, took power five years ago. But under international pressure, Israel began to ease the restrictions in 2010 and has allowed international aid agencies to import construction material.

The gravel was transferred a day after Egypt allowed building material into Gaza through its Rafah crossing, departing from a six-year ban. It was part of a shipment donated by the Gulf Arab state of Qatar, which has pledged $400 million to finance reconstruction.

Gaza economists say nearly 70 percent of the enclave's commercial needs - including building material and fuel - were being met through shipments via Israel and a network of smuggling tunnels running under the Egyptian border.

One Palestinian official said Israeli counterparts had promised "other building items" would be allowed into Gaza in the coming days.

"Israel has promised to ease the blockade more if the truce continues to hold," said the official, who asked not to be identified.

Israeli Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom, speaking to reporters in Jerusalem, said more than 300 truckloads of goods have been moving from Israel to the Gaza Strip on a daily basis.

"They can have much more if they would like to," he said.

Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez: Final Preview and Prediction

Tonight from Las Vegas, the UFC heavyweight title is on the line between Junior "Cigano" dos Santos, and the former champion, Cain Velasquez.

Dos Santos and Velasquez have met before, at the first UFC on Fox card last November. In that fight, dos Santos knocked out Velasquez in 64 seconds and became the new champion.

From there, both fighters would compete again at UFC 146, although against different opponents. Dos Santos would defend his heavyweight title against the former champion, Frank Mir, and Velasquez would face off against Antonio Silva in his first UFC fight. Dos Santos beat Mir by second-round TKO and Velasquez beat Silva by first-round TKO.

Tonight, dos Santos and Velasquez will meet for a second time, this time with dos Santos as champion. The first fight between these two lasted only 64 seconds, but there is still plenty that can be taken from that.

Velasquez was throwing a lot of leg kicks, and his game plan clearly involved taking away the lead leg of dos Santos. Additionally, expect Velasquez to shoot early and shoot often. He has seen the power of dos Santos, and he doesn't want to see it again.

Dos Santos is going to do what he always does: stand up with his opponents, avoid takedowns and pick his opponents apart with his boxing. Dos Santos has incredible speed and power, and he will use that to his advantage, as he always does.

    Who Wins?

  • Junior dos Santos (c)

  • Cain Velasquez

Many are saying that the first fight between these two was a fluke, or that Velasquez's knee injury affected the fight heavily. That may or may not be true, but don't expect anything to change this time around. Dos Santos will still come out with a knockout victory, it just won't be as fast as last time.

By the fourth round, dos Santos will land an uppercut and put Cain out cold to defend his title and tie the record for most consecutive UFC heavyweight title defenses.

Week's 2nd snowstorm hits Northeast, parts of Ohio

(AP) ? A widespread winter storm dumped snow over the Northeast and parts of Ohio on Saturday, just days after the regions were hit by another storm moving from the nation's midsection.

The National Weather Service expected up to a foot of snow in parts of southern New England, with the heaviest snowfall possibly in Providence, R.I., and Boston, which declared parking bans to allow snow removal vehicles to clean the streets. Winter storm warnings were in effect in parts of those states and in Connecticut.

New York City and Philadelphia saw a mix of rain and snow as the storm moved in from the west. In Ohio, Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati saw about 2 to 5 inches of snow by Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

"Expect those accumulations to kind of work their way northeastward through much of New York state and much of New England," weather service meteorologist Brian Hurley said.

Drivers throughout the regions were warned to be cautious. Officials lowered the speed limit on much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about 300 miles from the Ohio state line to east-central Pennsylvania, from 65 mph to 45 mph.

About 20 vehicles piled up in a storm-related chain-reaction crash on Interstate 93 in New Hampton, N.H., police said, and five people were injured.

In Albany, N.Y., a regional jet skidded into a snow bank at the airport and became stuck, temporarily stranding passengers en route to Chicago. The 66 passengers and four crew members aboard the GoJet Airlines flight, operating as United Express, were put on a bus and sent back to the airport. There were no injuries, and the incident didn't cause any other flight delays, airport authority spokesman Doug Myers said.

Flights at Philadelphia's airport, mostly arrivals, were delayed about an hour, spokeswoman Stacy Jackson said.

Parts of southern Indiana saw 6 to 8 inches of snow from the storm, some in areas that had received more than a foot from a blizzard earlier in the week.

That blizzard was part of a storm system that dumped more than a foot of snow in some places and has been blamed for at least 16 deaths. It also spawned more than a dozen tornadoes in Alabama, the National Weather Service said.

But Saturday's snow wasn't as heavy as that of the previous storm, the weather service said.

CSN: Sunday night is massive for Romo and RG3

Cowboys at Redskins

Key matchup: Tony Romo?s legacy vs. Robert Griffin III?s.

Outlook: It?s not a playoff game, but it might as well be one for Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.?

For Robert Griffin III, it's his first opportunity to prove he?s capable of winning on the grand stage.

Fair or not, that?s how it works in the NFL: quarterbacks receive a disproportionate amount of praise (or blame) for their team's outcome in big games.

This is one of those games.

?I don?t know if it?s fair,? Coach Mike Shanahan said. ?Sometimes somebody doesn?t have the supporting cast and can be a great quarterback and they just don?t have the team. But it really doesn?t matter, when people look at the great quarterbacks, they go back to Super Bowls and championships.?

When the hated rivals meet Sunday at FedEx Field, the winner will claim the NFC East championship and home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Romo enters the game with a reputation for coming up short when the stakes are high. Who could forget the botched hold on a late field goal against the Seahawks in the playoffs after he 2006 season? Just last season, in fact, the Cowboys faced a situation similar to Sunday?s. But as it turned out, it was Eli Manning, not Romo, who lifted his team into the postseason.

?Ultimately you always know what?s at stake and it?s part of playing that position,? Cowboys tight end Jason Witten said, asked if Romo feels the burden of being 1-3 in the playoffs. ?He really does a great job of embracing it. To be in this position, he has a lot to do with it because of how well he?s played.?

Two days from now, Romo will be looking to shed a label while Griffin will be seeking to earn one. The rookie is undefeated since the bye, but Sunday?s contest, under the lights, in prime time, will be by far the most important moment of his football career.

?If you play big on a big stage, people tend to write good things about you,? Griffin said. ?We all want to play well on the big stage or in a prime time game or in a game like this that comes down to the division. It?s like a conference championship game in college, but it just happened to play out this way that the last game of the year is a championship game. And we have to win this championship.?

(AP) ? Routing the UCLA Bruins almost seemed like a sidelight for Baylor Bears quarterback Nick Florence.

Nabbing one of Robert Griffin III's school records? Now that was a big deal.

The Bears overwhelmed the No. 17 Bruins 49-26 in the Holiday Bowl on Thursday night as Florence threw for two scores and ran for another. Glasco Martin ran for three touchdowns.

Florence completed 10 of 13 passes for 188 yards, giving him 4,309 for the season to break RG3's school record of 4,293 set in his 2011 Heisman Trophy-winning season.

"For me, I just wanted a chance to play. I just happened to follow a Heisman Trophy winner," Florence said. "I'm not Robert. I'm not 6-3. I don't run a 4.3. You saw that tonight. Man, if I could run a 4.3 it would be nice. So I just had to be me. I tried to manage this offense and play within myself. He's a heck of player, he's done a heck of a job for this program, put us on the map. I'm humbled and honored to hold that record. He deserves it. I never thought that would have happened this year. I just wanted to win games."

Baylor (8-5) won its final four games and five of six.

"That was a question we asked all our players, 'What was going to happen now that Robert's gone?'" coach Art Briles said. "And our guys responded, fought together, believed in each other. They have always sustained and never lost focus."

Lache Seastrunk rushed 16 times for 138 yards and one score for Baylor, which outgained UCLA 494-362. The Bears came in leading the nation in total offense with 578.8 yards per game.

Baylor's defense came up big, too. The Bears sacked Brett Hundley six times, including two by Chris McAllister, and shut down UCLA's career rushing leader Johnathan Franklin. Franklin, who averaged 130.8 yards this season, gained 12 yards on his first carry of the game but was a non-factor after that, finishing with just 34 yards on 14 carries.

Overall, the Bruins gained only 33 yards on 28 carries. They came in having averaged 202.9 yards rushing.

"They played well upfront," UCLA coach Jim Mora said. "When we are at our best is when we can run the football. We couldn't find any room to the football. They played physical."

Hundley was 26 of 50 for 329 yards and three touchdowns to set UCLA's season passing record with 3,740 yards. The old record was 3,470 by Cade McNown in 1998.

UCLA (9-5) lost its final three.

The Bruins were never in this one. Baylor raced to a 21-0 lead by early in the second quarter on Martin's 4-yard run and Florence's TD passes of 8 yards to Antwan Goodley and 55 yards to Tevin Reese.

UCLA punted four times and lost the ball on downs before getting a break when Baylor's Jordan Navjar fumbled after a reception when he was hit by Eric Kendricks, with Randal Goforth recovering at the Bears 21. Two plays later, Joseph Fauria caught a 22-yard pass from Hundley to pull the Bruins to 21-7.

Baylor quickly added two more touchdowns to put it out of reach at 35-7. Martin burst up the middle for his second touchdown of the game, a 26-yarder, and, after UCLA punted yet again, Seastrunk broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run with 1:58 left before halftime.

UCLA then converted two fourth downs, including a fake punt, to move to the Baylor 12 with 7 seconds left. On fourth-and-10, Mora opted to go for a field goal and Ka'imi Fairbairn converted from 30 yards.

Martin added a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter and Florence had a 1-yard scoring run in the fourth.

Martin had 98 yards on 21 carries.

Baylor rushed for 306 yards.

"We knew coming in that we could run the ball well, and the O-line did a heck of a job and made my job easy," Florence said. "It makes throwing a lot easier."

Hundley threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Shaq Evans early in the fourth quarter and a 34-yarder to Logan Sweet as the game ended.

China tightens Internet controls, legalizes post deletion

19 min.

China unveiled tighter Internet controls on Friday, legalizing the deletion of posts or pages which are deemed to contain "illegal" information and requiring service providers to hand over such information to the authorities for punishment.

The rules signal that the new leadership headed by Communist Party chief Xi Jinping will continue muzzling the often scathing, raucous online chatter in a country where the Internet offers a rare opportunity for debate.

The new regulations, announced by the official Xinhua news agency, also require Internet users to register with their real names when signing up with network providers, though, in reality, this already happens.

Chinese authorities and Internet companies such as Sina Corp have long since closely monitored and censored what people say online, but the government has now put measures such as deleting posts into law.

"Service providers are required to instantly stop the transmission of illegal information once it is spotted and take relevant measures, including removing the information and saving records, before reporting to supervisory authorities," the rules state.

The restrictions follow a series of corruption scandals amongst lower-level officials exposed by Internet users, something the government has said it is trying to encourage.

Li Fei, deputy head of parliament's legislative affairs committee, said the new rules did not mean people needed to worry about being unable to report corruption online. But he added a warning too.

"When people exercise their rights, including the right to use the Internet, they must do so in accordance with the law and constitution, and not harm the legal rights of the state, society ... or other citizens," he told a news conference.

Chinese Internet users already cope with extensive censorship measures, especially over politically sensitive topics like human rights and elite politics, and popular foreign sites Facebook, Twitter and Google-owned YouTube are blocked.

Earlier this year, the government began forcing users of Sina's wildly successful Weibo microblogging platform to register their real names.

The new rules were quickly condemned by some Weibo users.

"So now they are getting Weibo to help in keeping records and reporting it to authorities. Is this the freedom of expression we are promised in the constitution?" complained one user.

"We should resolutely oppose such a covert means to interfere with Internet freedom," wrote another.

The government says tighter monitoring of the Internet is needed to prevent people making malicious and anonymous accusations online, disseminating pornography and spreading panic with unfounded rumors, pointing out that many other countries already have such rules.

Despite periodic calls for political reform, the party has shown no sign of loosening its grip on power and brooks no dissent to its authority.

Happy Holidays: GOP Delivers Uncertainty to Middle Class

Apparently, uncertainty is a fate worse than death for a CEO. Billionaires bellyache about it constantly on TV, contending they must know, right now, whether next year?s tax rates will rise. Republicans bewail uncertainty, insisting CEOs must know, right now, whether they?ll get a tax holiday for overseas profits.

Their deep, abiding concern about the ill effects of uncertainty doesn?t extend, however, to the middle class. To Republicans and far too many billionaires and CEOs, weighing down workers with uncertainty about wages, health insurance and retirement is a fate well deserved.

In fact, Republicans in the past two years have gone hog-wild heightening middle class fear and uncertainty. In addition to demanding cuts to programs crucial to middle class certainty like Medicare and Social Security, Republican lawmakers in GOP-controlled states across the country have passed laws prohibiting union security clauses in collective bargaining agreements. This results in weaker unions and lower benefits and wages , not just for union workers but for everyone in union insecurity states.? That creates financial insecurity, the worst kind of uncertainty.

Union security clauses give labor organizations some financial certainty. They require any worker who benefits from a collective bargaining agreement to either join and pay dues or to decline membership and pay a smaller fee covering the cost of union services like negotiation and grievance resolution.

Some states ? union insecurity states ? forbid these clauses. There?s a total of 24 now, with GOP-controlled Michigan and Indiana joining this year. These governors say their efforts are intended to assist workers in union shops who don?t want to pay anything toward the cost of union services.

So, of course, these governors wouldn?t exclude a union, which would allow that union to retain security while denying it to all the rest. Right?

Wrong. That?s what Michigan and Indiana Republicans did. Indiana exempted government workers . Michigan deliberately omitted firefighters and police officers. In fact, one Republican lawmaker who voted to deny union security to Michigan Steelworkers and Auto workers and Iron workers tried unsuccessfully to have her husband?s union ? prison guards ? added to the exemptions. She wanted union security for her family, but she denied it to others.

The GOP in Michigan tried to position itself as the savior of workers, some sort of perverse Superman rescuing those who receive union benefits from the responsibility to help pay for union costs. Superheroes always win in the end, so Republicans should have no fear of a referendum in which voters get the chance to have their say on whether Michigan should be a union insecurity state. Right?

Wrong. The Michigan GOP barred a referendum by attaching an appropriation to the union insecurity bill, which under state law forecloses a ballot measure. That doesn?t make sense if Republicans really believe they?re helping workers. But maybe they remembered what happened next door in Ohio last year when voters smacked down a union busting law in a referendum vote of 62 percent to 38 percent.

Outlawing union security is union busting. That?s because federal law requires unions to represent everyone in a workplace, even those who don?t pay dues or fees. For example, if a worker who refused to pay dues or fees got fired for tardiness and demanded the union file a grievance challenging the dismissal, the union would have to do it. And pay the costs.

That erodes union funds, and ultimately bankrupts some unions. That?s the result sought by Republicans and union-busting, billionaire-funded groups like Americans for Greed ? oh, sorry, they call themselves Americans for Prosperity. (Not to mention the other result they want ? diminished support for Democrats, who unions typically back.) Republicans and Americans for Greed want to return to the robber baron days before a Democrat-controlled Congress passed the Wagner Act facilitating unionization in 1935.

The Internet Is An Excellent Place To Find Out About Home ...

Not every person is cut out to own their own home-based business, but that doesn?t imply you should not give it a shot. Today you simply need a computer to set up, for a very low cost, a business that you can manage from home. The hurdles are low: a high speed connection to the internet which is cheap right now, plus a little determination to get the essential research carried out. A computer-based business has a global reach with unlimited clients, whereas a traditional business is confined to local custom and has costly set-up expenses. Everyone in the world having an internet connection is a potential customer.

There are numerous ways to get your toes wet if you?re seriously considering a business on the Internet. You could begin on the Internet without having to be a computer geek, but knowing about using a computer helps. Rather than technical skills, what is more important for success on the internet is your level of knowledge with regards to something you like doing. As one example of this, individuals who are good at creative writing could give some thought to a web-based copywriting business. As the saying goes, content is king, so those with writing skills can readily become freelance writers for those who are not any good at writing. What it boils down to is determining a group of individuals who have a need for something, like say, articles, and providing them with it. Prepare a portfolio of your work, do a bit of marketing, and, hey presto! you have a business.

Online auction web sites are another avenue from which many people are making big money. Maybe you have one or more products that you could market online, or you could source some from wholesalers and then profit by adding a mark-up. Getting your product offers seen by prospective buyers is taken care of for you by places like eBay and other online auction web sites. All you have to do, is determine a price for your merchandise, list it available for sale, and then wait until a shopper chooses your product. You will collect payment if a person makes a purchase, and then you fulfill your side of the deal by sending the shopper their purchase.

Technological breakthroughs have made life simpler in so many ways. The computer has given average people the opportunity to own their own business. The Internet has all you need to launch a business. It provides access to products you can sell as well as information that shows you how to do it. Instead of re-invent the wheel, find what you think is a very good business model and follow its example in starting your own online business.

As opposed to a fulltime business you could just be after an additional income stream, which the Internet caters for handsomely. Connect your computer up to the Internet and you?re going to be able to find huge amounts of information about launching a business on the internet. You can only begin making money once you get your business launched, so don?t hold off in doing your research.
