Local college campus brings education home

The village of Newark has many hidden gems in the community that might surprise a visitor to the community.

Newark is home to Finger Lakes Community College?s Wayne County Campus Center. The college first came to Newark in 1990 offering classes to students at old state school on Maple Avenue. FLCC moved to the current location in the old Sarah Coventry building in 2006, adding on to the building and more than doubling the space they had on Maple Avenue.

With enrollment rising every year, the extra space is exactly what the college needed to meet the demands of local students.

Few would expect a small community to have a full service college like Newark does. Administrator Laila Paliotti said the Wayne County campus in Newark is capable of giving students the majority of their classes needed to reach their degree right in a location that?s convenient to many. And with smaller class sizes, averaging about 15 to 20 students, one-on-one attention is always available when needed.

The campus has eight classrooms, seven of which have overhead projectors, computers and smart boards. There are also two computer labs and the technology is the same students have access to at the main campus in Canandaigua. In all some 80 classes are available at the Wayne County campus in Newark, where GED classes are also available.

A biology lab and bio prep lab offer students microscopes and laptop computers for class use, and are equipped with anatomically correct mannequins and skeletons.

Among the more popular degrees sought are for business administration, liberal arts in science, elementary education, chemical dependency, criminal justice and human services. But one does not need to pursue a degree to enjoy the benefits of continuing education. Paliotti said many residents take the physical education classes or intro to psychology.

FLCC in Newark offers affordable education that is close to home and that can be important for new students entering as freshmen.
